Atrial Fibrillation, also known as AFib or AF, is an irregular heart rhythm that begins in one of the upper chambers of your heart. Patients who suffer from this condition experience poor movement of blood throughout the heart as well as a fast, chaotic heart rhythm, including skipping beats. In some cases, blood can pool in the heart and form clots, which could lead to a stroke or other serious medical emergency. If you have AFib, proper treatment is imperative to preserve your health over time.

There are multiple treatment options for AFib, including medications, nonsurgical procedures, surgery, and lifestyle adjustments. Your doctor will work with you to determine what the appropriate combination of interventions will be for you.

AFib Treatment Options

There are multiple options when it comes to AFib treatment; the treatment options that your doctor will choose will depend on your own medical needs and your individual case.

  • Medications: Blood thinners, heart-rate medicines such as beta-blockers, or heart rhythm medicines can be used to address the specific issues that come with AFib and help to manage your symptoms.
  • Nonsurgical Procedures: If medication doesn’t work or causes side effects, you can try cardioversion (using mild electrical shock to return your heart’s rhythm to normal) or catheter ablation (using a thin, flexible tube sent through a blood vessel to send out more targeted electrical signals to your heart) for attempts at intervention without going through surgery.
  • Surgical Procedures: There are multiple surgical procedures to treat AFib. If you are determined to require surgery, your cardiologist will recommend a specific treatment based on your individual condition and risk factors.

Signs You Have AFib and Need AFib Treatment

  • Heart Palpitations: If your heart feels like it is pounding, fluttering, or beating irregularly, you may have Atrial Fibrillation.
  • Shortness of Breath: When the heart doesn’t pump blood as it should, fluid can build up in the lungs, making it harder to breathe. Atrial Fibrillation can cause shortness of breath due to this. If you are experiencing this, you should contact us to see if you have Atrial Fibrillation and to see about AFib treatment.
  • Dizziness or Fainting: If your heart is not functioning properly or beating normally, then the rest of your body may not be getting enough blood. The lack of blood flow can cause dizzy spells or light headedness. AFib dizziness may be mild or severe, and may cause nausea or vomiting. Severe episodes can even lead to temporary loss of consciousness, known as fainting or syncope.
